Violence is not stopping in South Africa

Cape Town: Violent protests against the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma have taken a serious form in South Africa. So far 72 people have died in this violence and hundreds have been injured. The miscreants are targeting people of Indian origin. They are looting their shops and business units. The miscreants have set fire to hundreds of shopping centers, malls, warehouses, houses, and vehicles. Many highways have been blocked. Communication facilities have been destroyed. Goods worth Rs 10,400 crore have been damaged in arson and looting.

The police have arrested 3,000 people for the violence. Defense Minister Nosiviwe Nakkula has said that 10,000 soldiers have been deployed in the violence-hit areas. If the situation worsens further, 20 thousand soldiers will be deployed. According to the report, miscreants have looted more in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces. KwaZulu-Natal is the stronghold of former President Zuma. The situation is also getting worse in Durban, Soweto, Johannesburg. There is a food crisis in the whole country. President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the current violence as the biggest violence in South Africa since the 90s. In the year 1994, there were huge violent demonstrations against apartheid.

Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar spoke to his South African counterpart Naledi Pandor. Jaishankar raised the issue of the security of Indians in front of Pandor. To this Pandor assured that the South African government was doing everything possible to enforce law and order. The priority of the government is the early restoration of peace.
