Kabul: In Afghanistan, more women and children were killed and injured in the first six months of 2021 than in the first six months of any other year. This information was given in a report of the United Nations on Monday. The United Nations began systematically keeping records of the number in 2009. According to the report, the number of civilians killed and injured during violence in Afghanistan in the first six months of the year in the war-torn country has increased by 47 percent compared to the same period last year.
“I urge the leaders of the Taliban and Afghanistan to pay attention to the magnitude of the conflict and its dangerous effects on civilians,” said Deborah Lyon, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan. “The report gives a clear warning that if the violence is not curbed, a significant number of Afghan civilians will be killed and injured this year,” Lyon said in a statement accompanying the report. The Taliban have in recent times seized considerable territory, have dominated borders with several neighboring countries, and are in danger of capturing several provincial capitals. The threat of the Taliban has increased since US and NATO troops left Afghanistan. The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan reported that in 2021 so far 1659 civilians have been killed and 3254 civilians have been injured.
It said it was 47 percent higher than the corresponding period last year. According to the report, in the first six months of 2021, almost half of all these casualties were women and children. Of those killed, 32 percent are children, of which 468 are children and 1214 children have been injured. Among the dead, 14 percent are women, of which 219 are women, while the number of injured women is 508. 95 percent of the withdrawal of US-NATO troops has been completed and they will be fully withdrawn from Afghanistan by August 31.
