London: The UK government on Friday said it had formally asked the country’s drug regulator to assess whether it was infected with the coronavirus developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University. The vaccine may be authorized for use. The move comes amid questions over the preliminary results of the vaccine trial.

The company and the university said the most encouraging part of their conclusion is that it came to light because of Dodge’s mistakes. Matt Hancock, the UK’s health secretary, said he had asked the Drug and Health Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to determine if the vaccine “meets strict safety standards.”

This is the second vaccine to reach the formal assessment stage in the UK. Earlier, Pfizer and its German partner Bioentech had reached this stage. The American company Moderner Vaccine is not far behind. The UK government has ordered 100 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and plans to distribute it by December if approved. The regulator said it could not give a deadline for possible approval of the vaccine.

“No vaccine will be approved for supply in the UK unless it meets the required standards of safety, quality, and efficacy,” said MHRA chief executive June Rhine. Oxford and AstraZeneca said Monday that the vaccine was 62 percent effective in people who were given two doses, and up to 90 percent in those who were given half a dose after a full dose.
