New Delhi: Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawala has tweeted and assured Indians facing technical difficulties regarding their travel to the European Union. Poonawalla’s remarks came after the European Union’s new ‘Vaccine Passport’ scheme did not recognize the India-made version of the AstraZeneca-Oxford University vaccine. Poonawalla said that he took up the matter with regulatory bodies and diplomatic people. Hope this matter will be resolved soon.

Poonawalla wrote, ‘I realize that many Indians who have got the Covishield vaccine face problems traveling to the European Union. I assure everyone, I have raised this issue in a big way. Soon it will be resolved at the regulatory and diplomatic level.

What is Digital Covid Certificate?
The Covishield vaccine has been developed by Oxford University-AstraZeneca and is being manufactured in India by a Pune-based vaccine manufacturer. The European Union (EU) has so far only recognized Vaxjeveria, developed by AstraZeneca, Oxford. Other vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency are BioNTech-Pfizer, Moderna, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson).

From 1 July the EU plans a ‘digital COVID certificate’ to ‘facilitate the safe (and) free movement of citizens in the EU during the pandemic’. The ‘certificate’ is in the form of evidence that the person has either been vaccinated, has tested negative for Covid, or has recovered from the infection. Travelers outside the European Union must have one of these certificates. This certificate would have got the acceptance of the member countries of the union, which would allow free movement in the region. Under the current EU rules, Indians who have been vaccinated against Covidshield will not be allowed to move freely.
