Washington D.C: Millions of residents across the United States, Canada, and Mexico were captivated by the extraordinary occurrence of a total solar eclipse on Monday. This celestial event, where the moon entirely conceals the sun’s visage, created a narrow corridor of darkness known as the path of totality that traversed numerous cities, sparking widespread excitement.

The 2024 solar eclipse’s path of totality notably covered several densely populated regions, allowing an estimated 31.6 million inhabitants within this narrow strip to witness the eclipse in its full glory. Additionally, approximately 150 million individuals residing within a 322-kilometer radius of the path had the opportunity to observe the phenomenon.

In a remarkable feat of technology and outreach, NASA broadcasted live footage of the eclipse from space, providing a unique perspective of the event as seen by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This footage was shared widely across social media platforms, including a video on site X, offering viewers on Earth a glimpse of what the astronauts were experiencing.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon interposes itself between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow that completely obscures the sun’s face. Those situated within the path of totality are treated to the awe-inspiring sight of the moon’s shadow blanketing the sun entirely.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, also contributed to the eclipse’s coverage by sharing footage depicting the eclipse as viewed from Earth’s orbit. Contrasting with the terrestrial experience, the eclipse appeared as a distinct black spot against the Earth’s surface when observed from space. Musk, who also heads companies such as Tesla and The Boring Company, donned special sunglasses to safely view the eclipse and shared that he enjoyed the spectacle from the comfort of a Tesla Model S.

Similarly, astronauts aboard the ISS witnessed the gradual progression of a dark shadow enveloping parts of the US, a parallel phenomenon to what was observed by millions on the ground. This rare alignment of celestial bodies provided a moment of unity and wonder, as people from different nations looked up to the sky in unison to observe the grandeur of the cosmos.
