Tenants in America at risk

Washington: In the US, the nationwide eviction order is about to expire, threatening to force millions of citizens out of their homes amid the rise in cases of Covid-19. More than 3.6 million people in the United States are at risk of eviction as states slow down $47 billion in federal housing assistance during the pandemic.

This amount is given to the tenants and landlords through the states. In fact, America provides money to its tenants who are unable to pay rent, and this fund is given to the landlords. Tension in Congress escalated on Friday as there was no result on the extension of the adjournment order. Hours before the ban expired, Biden called on local governments to “take every step possible” to distribute the funds immediately. “There can be no excuse for any state or territory not to expedite funding to landlords and tenants,” Biden said in a statement. Every state and local government should get this fund so that we can prevent every possible eviction.”

The US President on Thursday appealed to Congress to pass a bill soon to extend its deadline. But there is a difference of opinion between the President and his colleagues in Parliament regarding this. Democratic lawmakers questioned this and could not support extending the ban for a few months. An attempt can be made to extend the deadline again on Saturday in the Senate. Congress approved about $47 billion in funding to states for tenants and landlords due to the closure of workplaces and the sudden loss of many people due to the Covid-19 crisis. But the MPs said the state government has been slow in distributing this money. He said on Friday that only $3 billion of this fund was spent.
