Yangon: Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party claimed on Monday that it had won enough seats in parliament to gain an absolute majority and remain in power. The party has filed a claim but the country’s Federal Election Commission has not yet released the results of Sunday’s voting.

“I can now confirm that we are winning more than 322 seats,” said NYD Information Committee spokeswoman Aung San Suu Kyi. There are 642 seats in Parliament. “We are going to win a total of 377 seats,” said Monywa Aung Sheen. But their numbers could be even higher. ”

Official reliable figures on turnout are not available and the Federal Election Commission had earlier said it could take up to a week to release the full results. The NLD was expected to win but there was speculation that the number of seats could be reduced due to its strained relations with ethnic minority parties, with which it had an alliance in the 2015 elections.

The attraction of the NLD is based on the popularity of its leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who became head of government with the post of state counselor after the 2015 elections. In this election, the NLD had won an overwhelming majority and ended five decades of military rule in the country.
