United Nations: The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday voted to suspend Russia from the world’s top human rights organization. The action was taken on allegations of gross human rights violations by Russian troops in Ukraine. The US and Ukraine have called this act of Russian soldiers a war crime.

In the UN General Assembly, 93 member states voted in favor of the resolution to suspend Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), while 24 member states voted against it. At the same time, 58 member countries remained absent from voting.

It is noteworthy that Russia is the second country whose UNHRC membership has been stripped. The General Assembly suspended Libya from the council in 2011. US Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield launched a campaign to suspend Russia from the 47-member Human Rights Council after photos and videos emerged of Russian soldiers killing civilians in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.
