Singapore city: The total population of Singapore declined by 4.1 percent to 50.45 lakh in June this year. The main reason for this may be the decline in the number of non-residents amid the Covid-19 travel restrictions. This is the sharpest decline since the government started collecting such data in 1970, according to official figures released on Tuesday.

The decline in the non-resident population was due to travel restrictions due to COVID-19 and the uncertain economic environment, and due to a reduction in foreign employment. In the brief report, the National Department of Population and Talent, which publishes annual population figures, noted that both civilian and permanent resident (PR) populations have declined year after year since the government began collecting such data in 1970.

Notably, the number of citizens fell by 0.7 percent to 3.5 million, while the number of permanent residents fell 6.2 percent to 4,90,000, ‘Channel News Asia’ quoted the data as saying.

The Department of National Population and Talent said, “Travel restrictions during the global pandemic were the main factor affecting the number of citizens and permanent residents in 2021 as more citizens and permanent residents are living abroad for 12 months or more in a row, requiring Not considered part of the resident population.

It said that only a few people became new citizens or permanent residents last year, possibly due to travel restrictions and operational limitations due to Covid-19. The biggest decline was seen in the non-resident population of 10.7 percent and it reached 14.7 lakhs.
