Jerusalem: Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Israel on Thursday. Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, 73-year-old Netanyahu, has formed the sixth government under his leadership, which includes several far-right constituents. Netanyahu has the support of 63 of the 120 members of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, all of whom are right-wing. 54 MPs voted against Netanyahu in the House.

Those supporting him include his Likud party, United Torah Judaism, the right-wing Otzma Yehudit, the Religious Zionist Party, and Noam, supported by the ultra-radical regime. Many people have expressed apprehension that this equation made under the leadership of Netanyahu may lead to disagreement with the government of a large part of the country’s population. Shortly before Israel’s 37th government is to receive a vote of confidence, the Knesset elected Likud Party MP Amir Ohana as its new speaker. Ohana, who served as Minister of Justice and Public Security in previous governments, is the first openly gay speaker of the Knesset.

Netanyahu’s government sets three national goals
In his address to the Knesset before the new government was sworn in, Netanyahu said his government’s three “national goals” were to stop Iran’s progress toward nuclear weapons, run bullet trains across the country, and bring more Arabs under the Abraham Accords. Countries have to be brought. During Netanyahu’s speech, opposition members were repeatedly heckled and called him ‘weak’ and ‘racist’. Amidst the uproar, Netanyahu said, respect the mandate of the voters. This is not the end of democracy or the end of the country.

He promised to improve the personal security of the country’s citizens and reduce the rising cost of living. During this, many opposition MPs were expelled from the house. Netanyahu has announced the appointment of 31 ministers and three deputy ministers. Two ministers each will work together in the Ministry of Defence, Education, and Welfare. There are only five women as ministers. After Netanyahu announced the formation of the government, outgoing Prime Minister Yer Lapid listed the achievements of his government in his address. He also listed the achievements of his predecessor and coalition partner Naftali Bennett. Lapid said, “We are handing over the government to you in good condition. Don’t try to ruin it. We will return soon.’ He had earlier said in a Facebook post that he would continue to struggle to topple the incoming government and would return.

Shas party leader Aryeh Deri clears the way to become a minister
He said that this is not the end, but the beginning of the struggle for our beloved country. Despite a clear mandate for the right wing to form the next government led by Netanyahu in the November 1 election, talks between the coalition partners went on till the last minute. The Knesset passed laws submitted by the coalition partners that form the government, clearing the way for ruling party leader Aryeh Deri to become a minister despite his previous conviction in a case.
