Johannesburg: Ginji Mandela, daughter of South African anti-apartheid leader Nelson and Winnie Mandela, has died at the age of 59. State television South Africa Broadcasting Corporation has reported that Mandela died in a hospital in Johannesburg on Monday morning. She was serving as the South African ambassador to Denmark at the time of her death.

Mandela’s daughter came to international attention in 1985 after the White Minority Government offered to release Nelson Mandela from captivity provided she condemned the violence perpetrated by her movement against apartheid, the Africa National Congress. The radical discrimination of apartheid was effective at that time in South Africa. Jinji Mandela read his letter, rejecting the proposal at a public meeting. This meeting was broadcast worldwide.
