Jerusalem: Israel seems to be moving towards the fourth general election in two years. The last attempt to uphold the government and prevent Parliament from being automatically dissolved also failed. Negotiations between the two major parties of the coalition government failed in the budget agreement and members of the Likud Party and the Blue and White Party till Tuesday in the late-night session of Parliament. Voted against extending the budget passage deadline two more weeks.

There was 49 votes against the motion while 47 votes in favor. If the government is not able to pass the budget by midnight on Tuesday, according to Israeli law, Parliament will be dissolved and mid-term elections will have to be held within 90 days. There has been a dispute over the budget since the government’s formation in May between the Likud Party of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Blue and White Party of Defense Minister Benny Gantz.

Netanyahu and Gantz had proposed extending the budget passing deadline by two more weeks by Tuesday to reach an agreement on the 2020 budget, but members of both parties voted against the proposal in Parliament.

The Prime Minister said on Twitter, “We do not want elections and we voted against them this evening, but we are not afraid of elections – because we will win the election.” Elections in Israel can be held in March if Parliament is dissolved. If this happens, it will be the fourth election from 2019. This time the election will be between the Corona Virus epidemic, the Economy Crises, and the ongoing lawsuit against Netanyahu on corruption charges.
