Huge fire broke out in Bangladesh’s Rohingya refugee camp, hundreds of homes destroyed

Dhaka: A fire broke out in a large Rohingya Refugee Camp in southern Bangladesh on Thursday, in which hundreds of houses were destroyed. Officials said no casualties were reported in the incident.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that more than 550 homes were partially or completely destroyed by the fire. About 3,500 people lived in them and there are about 150 shops here. A fire broke out in Nayapara camp in Cox’s Bazar district early Thursday. More than a million refugees from Myanmar live in this area.

Nayapara is the old camp, which was settled many decades ago. A senior refugee officer, Mohammad Shamsud Duja, said it took two hours for the fire brigade to control the fire. He said that no one was seriously injured and the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
