Washington: US President Joe Biden wants to remove the problem related to the Green Card. The White House said in a statement that the inordinate delay in granting green cards to thousands of talented Indian technology professionals is a major cause of concern for Indian-Americans and their dependent children living here. The process of issuing green cards to such people sometimes takes decades.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the president certainly wants to address the delay in the process of issuing green cards. Saki was responding to a question on October 1 on the waste of about 80,000 unused employment-based green cards, which are officially called legal permanent residence. The wastage happened because the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is unable to allocate these to the many millions of people awaiting green cards.

Indian technology professionals have urged the Byden administration and the US Congress to make necessary legislative changes to not let those green card slots run out, thousands of these waiting decades.

Earlier this week, Congressman Marienette Miller-Meeks introduced the Employment Visa Protection Bill, which would allow USCIS to preserve unused employment-based visas for use in fiscal years 2020 and 2021. Earlier, in the fiscal year 2020, a total of 1 lakh 22 thousand family-preference visas were left unused.
