Seoul: Former President Lee Myung-bak was jailed on Monday, four days after South Korea’s top court upheld a 17-year sentence for corruption. ) Sent back.

A broadcast on South Korean television showed a convoy of black vehicles arriving at the Dongbu detention center in Seoul. The former president was also in one of these vehicles. Officials at the center later confirmed his imprisonment. Earlier on Monday, Bak was taken from his home to Seoul’s prosecutor’s office to formally notify him of his sentence and verify his identity.

Bach, 78, has been convicted of taking bribes from big industrialists, including Samsung, during and before his presidency during 2008-13, embezzling money from a company he owned and committing other corruption. Bak was initially sentenced by a Seoul district court in 2018 to 15 years in prison.

He was released on bail several months later. But he was remanded in custody in February this year after an appellate court canceled his bail and sentenced him to 17 years in prison. Bach appealed against the decision to cancel bail and was released a few days later. The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld his 17-year sentence.
