Havana: A five-star hotel was damaged by a powerful explosion in the Cuban capital Havana on Friday. Officials say eight people died in the incident. President Miguel Diaz Kanel’s office tweeted that the explosion was caused by a gas leak at Hotel Saratoga in Havana early Friday.

On behalf of the office, it was said that in view of the possibility of people being trapped, a search and rescue operation has been started at the spot. It reported that eight people lost their lives in the incident. Local media reports quoted officials as saying that around 30 people were injured in the incident while 13 were missing.

Havana Governor Reynaldo García Zapata told local media that there were no tourists at the 96-room Hotel Saratoga as renovations were underway. The Cuban news agency ACN published photos of serious damage to the Hotel Saratoga in Havana and a cloud of dust rising into the sky.
