Paris: French officials say an explosion at a cemetery in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Wednesday during a memorial service to mark the end of World War I. Many people were injured.

Representatives from several countries were present at the event, which was held at a non-Muslim cemetery, French Foreign Ministry officials said. However, the identities of the injured could not be ascertained. World War I ended today, and on Wednesday, 102 years after its end, events were held in many European countries.

The incident came after a knife attack on a guard posted at the French embassy in Jeddah on October 29. He was assassinated by a student after a cartoon of Pangbar was shown in class by a teacher in France, which has led to protests against France in Muslim countries. Amid ongoing tensions, France has appealed to its citizens in Saudi Arabia to be “extremely vigilant”.
