Toronto: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced elections on Sunday and will seek to return to power once again, citing Canada as one of the most fully immunized countries in the world. Trudeau, after meeting with the governor-general, announced that elections would be held on September 20. The Governor-General is a ceremonial post, which is the representative of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain as head of state.

Trudeau would like to win a majority of seats in parliament. His Liberal Party was reduced to a minority two years ago and was dependent on the opposition to get the bill passed. Elections are being held in Canada amid the new wave of Covid-19. This wave could be due to the delta nature of the coronavirus.

Trudeau is not as popular in the country as before, but the way his government has dealt with the pandemic has been termed successful. Canada currently has a sufficient number of vaccines for all citizens. More than eighty percent of eligible Canadian citizens have been fully vaccinated, and more than 82% have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The government has spent billions of rupees to revive the economy amid the lockdown. Robert Bothwell, a professor of Canadian history and international relations at the University of Toronto, said that if a minority government comes back, “discord will immediately begin.” Trudeau is no longer popular.”
