Dalai Lama mourns the death of Nobel laureate John Hume

Dharamshala: Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on Tuesday mourned the demise of Ireland leader and Nobel laureate John Hume. Hume died at the age of 83 on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in his country Northern Ireland for his pivotal role in negotiating with the rebels. The settlement ended violence in Northern Ireland.

In a condolence message written to Hume’s wife, the Dalai Lama wrote, “I am pleased to have met your husband on one of the few trips to Northern Ireland. He had deep and unwavering faith in the power of dialogue and negotiation to resolve conflict. ” He wrote, “It was his confidence in his leadership and negotiating power that led to the Good Friday Agreement reached in 1988. His steadfast perseverance has set us an example to follow. ” The Dalai Lama said, Hume had a commitment to peace and non-violence to resolve the conflict. It did not matter to them how complex and difficult it is. The meaningful life he led is an example for others.
