London: Boris Johnson on Thursday announced his decision to step down as leader of the Conservative Party, saying he was saddened to leave the world’s best post. “I want to tell you how sad I am to leave the best office in the world,” Johnson, 58, said in an address to the nation outside the British prime minister’s official residence 10 Downing Street.

Johnson will remain in charge of 10 Downing Street until the process of electing a new Conservative Party leader is complete. The party’s convention is to be held in October. Johnson promised to give the new leader as much support as possible. He thanked the British people “for the privileges granted”.
