Britain-EU trade deadlock going on

Brussels: The deadlock in the ongoing negotiations for an agreement on trade relations between the European Union and the UK following Brexit remained on Friday. European negotiator Michael Barnier said that it seemed as if the chance of compromise was getting out of hand. He said that there is very little time left and it seems that instead of going ahead in the conversation, we are going backward.

After the seventh round of talks, he said, “I don’t understand why we are wasting precious time.” The British side, on the other hand, dismounted that the EU said Britain would have to follow EU rules for free trade altogether, even though it had left the EU after Brexit on 31 January.

UK negotiator David Frost said, “The EU is still not only insisting that we should accept the EU’s state aid and fisheries policy, but it is also insisting that the talks This should be agreed upon before any significant progress is made. ”

The UK also wants a free trade agreement with the European Union on the lines of ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement between Canada and the European Union. On the other hand the European Union wants to ensure that both have the same rules on a range of issues, including workers’ rights, the environment and government subsidies before discussing such agreements.
