The Taliban’s immediate involvement in the violence has not been confirmed. Jilani Farhad, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said prison security personnel were removing the alleged division created by inmates in Block Five of the jail when the violence erupted.

He said that the police tried to take some unnecessary things from the prisoners, which the prisoners resisted. Shirjai said one in eight people was shot dead. He said the matter is under investigation. An official from the province said on condition of anonymity that the inmates had set fire to a part of the jail. This has not been confirmed by Farhad and Shirjai.
