New Delhi: To make calls from landline to mobile phones across the country, it will be mandatory for customers to put a zero (0) before the number from January 1, 2021. The Department of Telecommunications (Telecom dept DoT) has accepted the TRAI’s proposal.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had recommended on May 29, 2020 to put ‘zero’ (0) before the number for such calls. This will enable telecom service providers to generate higher numbers.

The Department of Telecommunications said in a circular issued on November 20 that TRAI’s recommendations for a change in the way landlines are used to dial mobile numbers have been accepted. This will facilitate a sufficient number of numbers for mobile and landline services. According to the circular, after implementing the said rule, to make a call from landline to mobile, one has to dial zero before the number.

The Department of Telecommunications stated that telecom companies must provide zero landing facility to all landline customers. This feature is currently available for calls from outside your area. Telecom companies have been given till January 1 to adopt this new arrangement.

This change in the method of dialing will enable telecom companies to generate 254.4 crore additional numbers for mobile services. This will help meet future needs.
