United Nations: UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay condemned the incident in Uttar Pradesh last month of the murder of a young journalist and appealed to the authorities to apprehend the culprits at the earliest so that other criminals do not dare to ‘censorship on the gun’. Last month, journalist Shubham Mani Tripathi, who was returning home after riding on a bike in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district, was shot dead by two assailants. Azole said, “I condemn the incident of Shubham Mani Tripathi’s murder.” I appeal to the authorities to bring the culprits to justice which is necessary to instill fear in other criminals who are censoring on the strength of gun. ”

The organization said in a statement that UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists by taking several other steps under the UN’s action plan on global awareness programs, capacity building and journalists’ safety, and on the issue of impunity. A senior official said that on Friday, the National Human Rights Commission issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and the state’s police chief in the case of Tripathi’s murder. Tripathi had reportedly reported about the sand mafia, which led to his murder. According to reports, Tripathi worked for the Hindi daily Kampu Mail. The Press Council of India also condemned the murder incident and sought a report from the state government on the matter. Tripathi was shot dead near the milk market in Unnao on 19 June.
