New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla presided over a review meeting on the construction of the new Parliament building. Construction of the new building will begin in December 2020 and is expected to be completed by October 2022. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha announced that no compromise will be made in ensuring timely completion of the new Parliament building and quality control. The new building will have separate offices for Members of Parliament. Other facilities provided to the members will make the seats of each Member of Parliament more comfortable in the chambers and will have digital facilities which will be a pioneering step towards a paperless office. The new building will also have a lounge for MPs, a library, six committee rooms, and a dining room.
In the direction of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, it was decided that a monitoring committee would be constituted to monitor the construction work of the new building. This monitoring committee will include, among others, officials from the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, KLOV, NADINPA, and the architect/designer of the project.

In this meeting, Birla was briefed on the progress made in shifting the existing facilities and other structures from the proposed area for construction of the new building. The various measures to be taken to control air and noise pollution during the fencing and construction process around the area were explained in detail.

Officials from the Ministry of Urban Affairs told Om Birla what would be the arrangements for the visit of highly distinguished person and staff during the construction period of the new building and especially during the Parliament session. The existing Parliament House will be equipped with suitable facilities to provide more useful space for holding Parliamentary ceremonies, so as to ensure the use of this building along with the new building.

Apart from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha chambers, the new building will have a grand constitution chamber, which will have original items of the constitution, digital displays, etc., along with other items to showcase India’s democratic heritage. Visitors will be provided the facility to visit this hall, so that they can learn about the visit to India as a parliamentary democracy.
