Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday told the Mumbai High Court that it has incorporated several tactile features in notes for the visually impaired. A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice MS Karnik was hearing a petition by the National Association of the Blind. The petitioner has claimed that the visually impaired find it difficult to recognize and differentiate the new notes and coins. The petitioner’s counsel Uday Varujinkar told the court on Monday that the earlier notes and coins were of different sizes, making them easily identifiable.

“RBI, after the filing of this application, has developed a mobile application which can be used by visually impaired persons,” he said. Senior advocate Venkatesh Dhond, appearing for RBI, told the court that apart from developing the application, the RBI has also approached several associations working for the visually impaired.

A hundred rupee note has a triangle and four raised lines, and a 500 rupee note has a circle and five lines, 2000 has one import and seven lines. The bench said that the problems raised in the petition are serious. The court asked the petitioner to give an affidavit giving further suggestions.
