New Delhi: The Center has defended the validity of the new Information Technology (IT) rules before the Delhi High Court, saying these rules will “prevent abuse of freedom of the press” and prevent fake news in the digital media space. Will work to protect civilians.

The Center said this in its counter-affidavit to a petition challenging the constitutional validity of the new IT rules. “While the right to freedom of speech and expression, including freedom of the press, is extremely important for a vibrant democracy like India, citizens cannot be treated as passive consumers,” the Center said.

The Center in its affidavit said that several cases of deteriorating law and order situations have come to the fore due to propaganda of false information in the media. Due to the circulation of sensational information through digital media, people misunderstand it, which causes a lot of damage. Due to the spread of fake news people have a wrong impression.

The new IT rules will seek to prevent abuse of press freedom by empowering citizens with a mechanism to raise their grievances related to the content being published by digital news publishers through a grievance redressal mechanism. This was stated in an affidavit jointly filed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
