New Delhi: Prime Minister termed the Indian men’s hockey team’s victory at the Olympics after 41 years as “historic” and said the day will remain in the memory of every Indian. Congratulating the Indian team on the victory, the Prime Minister said that India is proud of its hockey team.

India defeated Germany 5-4 in a thrilling encounter to win the bronze medal at the Olympics after 41 years. In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Historic! Today will remain in the memories of every Indian. Congratulations to the men’s hockey team for bringing the bronze medal to India. With this achievement, he has attracted the attention of the whole country, especially the youth. India is proud of its hockey team.”

The eight-time Olympic champion and world number three India were at one point trailing 1-3 but managed to overcome the pressure and register a win with four goals in eight minutes. Simranjit Singh (17th and 34th) scored two goals for India while Hardik Singh (27th), Harmanpreet Singh (29th), and Rupinder Pal Singh scored one goal each. The Indian team won an Olympic medal 41 years after winning the last of its eight gold medals at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

With this, Germany’s Florian Wellbrock won the men’s 10km marathon swimming gold at the Tokyo Olympics here on Thursday after winning a bronze medal in the pool. Wellbrock took the gold medal with a time of 1hr 48 mins and 33.7 s to lead 25.3 s. This is the largest margin of victory since the event’s inclusion in the Beijing 2008 Games.
