India successfully tests surface-to-air missile system

Balasore (Odisha): India on Friday successfully tested a quick-response surface-to-air missile (QRSAM) system. The missile was launched from a launch site in Odisha for testing and it shot down a medium-range and unmanned aerial vehicle (PTA) at medium altitude.

The state-of-the-art missile was launched from the nearby Chandipur Integrated Test Range at around 3.50 pm, defense sources said.

The system is capable of detecting, tracking and destroying targets, a statement said. This system is designed to provide air defense to the attacking detachment of the Indian Army. It was fired from a level solid propellant rocket motor. All indigenous subsystems have been used in advanced missiles. This missile can be fired using a mobile launch.

All elements of the QRSAM weapon system such as batteries, multi-function radar, battery monitoring radar, battery command post vehicle and mobile launcher were deployed for the test, the statement said.

According to the statement, the radar detected the “Banshi PTA” target from a distance and when it reached the lethal range of the target, the missile was fired and it hit the target directly and destroyed it. Different laboratories of Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) like DRDL, RCI, LRDE, R&D E (E), IRDE, and ITR participated in the test.

The missile is completely indigenous and has an active RF seeker, the “Electro-Mechanical Actuation” (EMA) system. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, DD R&D Secretary, and DRDO Head G Satish Reddy congratulated the DRDO scientists for this achievement.
