Morning incident
On the morning of 27 February, when the Sabarmati Express reached Godhra railway station, flames started rising from one of its S-6 coaches and there was a huge fire inside. The passengers in the coach were engulfed in flames. All these pilgrims were returning from Ayodhya. Most of these people were Karsevaks. The tragic death of these 59 kar sevaks soaked Gujarat’s forehead.

However, on the very next day of the Godhra carnage, the matter became turbulent. The incident triggered a horrific riot in Gujarat after the bodies of the karsevaks were handed over to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on 28 February.
