New Delhi: India, one of the strong contenders for the title, started with a win by defeating Spain 2-0 in the Pool D match of the 15th FIH World Cup men’s hockey tournament.

In the match played in front of more than 20000 spectators at the newly built Birsa Munda Stadium, which is said to be the world’s largest hockey stadium, Amit Rohidas scored the first goal for India on a penalty corner in the 12th minute. Hardik Singh scored the second goal in the 26th minute.

Neither team could score after the break. India has to play England in the next match on January 15 at the same ground while the last league match will be against Wales on January 19 in Bhubaneswar. India started with a win by defeating Spain 2-0
