Great athlete Milkha Singh cremated with full state honors

Chandigarh: Legendary athlete Milkha Singh was cremated with full state honors on Saturday, marking the end of an era that set many new records in track events in independent India. Milkha Singh was 91 years old. He was given a tearful farewell in the presence of several celebrities including family members and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju. Milkha Singh, popularly known as ‘Udan Sikh’, passed away on Friday night due to complications related to Covid-19.

He was lit by his son and star golfer Jeev Milkha Singh. Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator VP Singh Badnore, Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh were also present on the occasion. PGIMER Director Prof. Jagat Ram was also present at Milkha Singh’s funeral. Milkha Singh was admitted in this hospital.

In honor of this great sprinter, the police team turned its weapons upside down. Milkha was also given a gun salute. The Punjab government has declared one-day state mourning on the death of Milkha Singh. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had earlier said that his last rites would be performed with full state honors. Earlier, the last journey of this great athlete started from Milkha’s residence in Sector-8. His body was taken in a vehicle and common people also bid him last farewell till he reached the crematorium in Sector-25.
