Government to sell infrastructure assets worth ₹1.62 lakh crore in current financial year

New Delhi: The central government told Parliament on Monday that the government can sell infrastructure assets worth Rs 1.62 lakh crore in the current financial year. The government had announced a National Monetization Pipeline (NMP) worth Rs 6 lakh crore last year. Here monetization means earning money from the use of government assets. The private sector is also involved in this process.

What is nmp program
The objective of the National Monetization Pipeline is to bring out the real value of government assets in different sectors. These include many sectors including power, roads, and railways. For this, a time frame of four years i.e. till 2025 has been fixed. The NMP program can be called a medium-term road map according to the Government’s Asset Monetization Initiative.

Government assets worth Rs 97,000 crore monetized in FY22
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary told the Lok Sabha in a written reply to a question on Monday that government assets worth about Rs 97,000 crore were monetized during the last financial year. The assets monetized include Highway Toll-Operate-Transfer (ToT) based on PPP concession, Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) of NHAI, POWERGRID InvIT, Annual Accrual from Mineral and Coal Blocks in FY 2021-22, Redevelopment of Railway Colony Private investment includes leasing of 6 airports on PPP mode and Port Terminals bid on PPP mode.
