FSSAI Cracks Down on Hazardous Chemical

New Delhi: In a significant move to safeguard public health, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a stern warning against the use of calcium carbide, a hazardous chemical, for the artificial ripening of fruits. This directive comes in the wake of reports indicating the prevalence of chemical ripening agents in markets, which pose severe health risks to consumers.

The Dangers of Calcium Carbide in Fruit Ripening

Calcium carbide, when used for ripening, releases acetylene gas—a substance that can contain harmful traces of arsenic and phosphorus. These elements are known carcinogens and can lead to serious health issues such as cancer. The immediate side effects of consuming fruits ripened with calcium carbide include dizziness, increased thirst, irritation, weakness, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, and potentially life-threatening conditions like skin ulcers.

FSSAI’s Enforcement and Alternative Solutions

To combat this unsafe practice, the FSSAI has not only prohibited the use of calcium carbide but also mandated strict compliance with this ban, especially during the peak mango season. Violators face severe consequences under the provisions of the FSS Act, 2006, and related regulations. State and union territory food safety departments have been instructed to remain vigilant and enforce the ban diligently.

Ethylene Gas: A Safer Ripening Agent

Recognizing the need for a safer alternative, the FSSAI has approved the use of ethylene gas for fruit ripening. Ethylene, a naturally occurring hormone in fruits, is involved in their ripening process through a series of chemical and biochemical activities. It is considered safe for human consumption and does not pose the health hazards associated with calcium carbide.

The Central Insecticide Board and Registration Committee have endorsed the use of Ethephon 39 percent SL, a compound that releases ethylene, for the ripening of fruits. This approval provides a healthier option for fruit traders and handlers, ensuring that the fruits brought to market are both safe and naturally ripened.

Consumer Awareness and Safety

The FSSAI’s initiative underscores the importance of consumer awareness regarding the safety of the fruits they purchase. Consumers are encouraged to buy from reputable sellers who adhere to safety regulations and avoid using banned chemicals for ripening. The move by FSSAI aims to not only protect consumers but also to promote ethical practices within the fruit trade industry.
