Thane: A court in Thane, Maharashtra on Friday sent Hindu religious leader Kalicharan to 14-day judicial custody for allegedly making “objectionable” remarks against Mahatma Gandhi. It is noteworthy that the police of Naupada police station in Thane district had arrested Kalicharan from Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, where he was lodged in a similar case in jail.

He was brought on transit remand here on Thursday evening and was produced before the court on Friday morning. Thane Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) SV Metil Patil sent Kalicharan to judicial custody. Heavy deployment of the police force was made in the court premises at the time of his production. The Naupada police station has registered an FIR against Kalicharan on the basis of a complaint by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Maharashtra government minister Jitendra Awhad for his alleged controversial remarks.

It is noteworthy that an FIR has been lodged against him in many parts of Maharashtra besides Chhattisgarh for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi at an event held in Raipur on December 26 last year. The Raipur Police had arrested Kalicharan for his alleged derogatory remarks against the Father of the Nation. On January 12 this year, the Wardha Police of Maharashtra had also arrested Kalicharan on the basis of an FIR registered in the same case. An FIR has also been lodged against Kalicharan in Akola district of Maharashtra.
