The Bail Pola festival is not just limited to Maharashtra; it is also celebrated in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of South India. Known by various names such as Pola Parv, Pola Amavasya, and Bhadrapada Amavasya in North India, this festival is a significant cultural event.
Traditions and Rituals
In Maharashtra, the festival is celebrated on the new moon day of Bhadrapada, also known as Sawan Monday. It is also referred to as Pithori Amavasya, Kushgrahani, and Kushotpatini. The celebration spans two days, featuring Bail Pola (Meetha Pola) and Tanha Pola. On Bail Pola, the focus is on worshipping the bulls, while on Tanha Pola, children go door-to-door with clay bulls, receiving offerings from people.
Mythological Significance
The festival has deep mythological roots. According to legend, Kansa, the demon king, made several attempts to kill Lord Krishna during the Dwapar Yuga but failed. He then sent a demon named Polasur, who disguised himself as a bull. Lord Krishna recognized and killed Polasur, leading to the celebration of Bail Pola. Additionally, the festival is linked to Nandi, the sacred bull and vehicle of Lord Shiva, further enhancing its significance.
Unique Customs
On Bail Pola, bulls and cows are not tied up in the morning. Instead, they are kept loose and pampered with massages using turmeric, ubtan, and mustard oil. After a thorough bath, they are adorned with beautiful garlands, metal jewelry, and clothes. Special dishes like Thethri and Khurma are prepared and offered to them after the puja.
