Case against Italian Marine closed in Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ordered the closure of the criminal case against two Italian marines to kill Kerala fishermen. Italy has deposited Rs 10 crore in the Supreme Court in this case. After the compensation was deposited, the Supreme Court quashed the case.

These marines will be prosecuted in Italy. The International Court of Justice had decided to try the Italian marines in their country in this case, because the incident took place in the international maritime zone.

The court ordered the Kerala High Court to distribute this ten-crore rupee to the victim’s family. Instructions have been issued to give Rs 4 crore to the aggrieved party and Rs 2 crore to the boat owner from the amount of compensation. In this case, the court said that it is satisfied with the amount of compensation and the aggrieved parties have also agreed to it.

Earlier, the central government had told the court that Italy has deposited Rs 10 crore of compensation in the registry of the Supreme Court. According to the International Tribunal, the Italian Marine will not be tried in India, but in Italy. The Government of India has accepted this decision.

In 2012, Italian marine commandos shot two fishermen from Kerala near Lakshadiv. Italy says that the commandos aboard the ship carrying the oil tanker shot the fishermen thinking them to be robbers. Since then, the trial’s issue, compensation was going on against the sailors of Italy. However, during the last hearing, Italy had assured both the marines to run the case. Whereas the Supreme Court, without knowing the side of the family, refused to close the case here without getting compensation.
