Chennai: Karima Begum, the mother of Oscar Award-winning composer AR Rahman, died on Monday. Rahman has uploaded a picture of his mother without a caption on his Twitter page.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K.K. Palaniswami wrote on Twitter, lamenting, “Sad to hear news of AR Rahman’s mother Karima Begum’s demise.” DMK President MK Stalin has also mourned. He tweeted, “He played a huge role in Rahman’s musical journey from Tamil cinema to the world map.”

Rehman’s associate singer Shreya Ghoshal said that Begum was very dear to the people of her realm. Rahman sir was very sad due to this news. Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur tweeted, “Your heart will be full, I know. But your mother has left inner strength with you. Stay strong my friend.”

Rahman started his journey in the world of film music from Mani Ratnam’s film “Roja”. With the Academy Award, Grammy, Bafta and the Golden Globes, he became famous worldwide for the next ten years. He always gave credit for this musical journey to his mother.
