Madurai: A fire broke out in the Bharat Gaurav tourist train that was traveling from Lucknow to Rameswaram, killing eight people on board. The train stopped about 1 km from Madurai Railway Station. Preliminary investigation suggests that the fire was caused by cooking activities with gas cylinders by the pilgrims on board the train.

The fire started from one coach and quickly spread to the adjacent coach. The passengers panicked and got off the train as soon as possible. All the passengers who died in this accident are said to be from Uttar Pradesh.

The tourist coach was carrying passengers on an Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) tour and had reached Madurai from Lucknow when the incident happened around 5:15 a.m. Officials said the fire occurred when the train was halted at Madurai Yard Junction on Saturday morning.’
