AFI to celebrate National Javelin Throw Day from now on 7th August

New Delhi: Neeraj Chopra created history by winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics on August 7 and now the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) will celebrate the day as National Javelin Throw Day. The 23-year-old Chopra on Saturday became only the second Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics by throwing a javelin to a distance of 87.58m in Tokyo.

During the felicitation ceremony of Chopra and other athletes, AFI’s Planning Commission Chairman Lalit Bhanot said, “To promote javelin throw across India, we will celebrate August 7 as National Javelin Throwing Day and from next year we will recognize The receiving units will organize javelin throw competition in their respective states on this day.

“After this, there will be inter-district competitions and we will provide the javelin (as a lot of javelins will be required). In the coming years, we will expand this competition to make it a national competition.” The AFI had started the National Open Javelin Throw Championship in 2018 with the third tournament to be held in October this year.

Chopra said, “I am glad that AFI is working on remembering my achievement in the days to come. I will be happy if my achievement causes the youth of this country to join athletics, especially javelin throw.” “If the children get javelin and other facilities, I hope they will join the sport and I will be happy to encourage them,” he said.
