New Delhi: Chief Justice of India NV Raman has said that more than 4 crore cases are pending in the lower courts of the country. He said this during a press conference on Saturday after the joint conference of the Chief Ministers of the State and the Chief Justice of the High Court. Chief Justice of India NV Raman said that there is a shortage of judges to dispose of pending cases in the courts.

NV Raman said that there are only 20 judges per 10 lakh population in the country, which is very less to deal with the increasing number of cases of litigation. Many of the 24,000 sanctioned posts for judicial officers in the country’s lower courts are still vacant.

At the same time, the Chief Justice expressed concern over the filing of insignificant petitions in the courts. He said that the concept of public interest litigation has now turned into private interest litigation in many cases. Sometimes they are being used to stall projects or to put pressure on government officials.
