Impact of new IT rules, Meta and WhatsApp are looking for Chief Compliance Officer in India

New Delhi: Meta and WhatsApp are looking for candidates for the post of Nodal Contact and Grievance Officer as well as Chief Compliance Officer. Under the IT Rules of India (New IT Rules 2021), appointment to these posts is mandatory in big social media companies. Advertisements for these vacancies have been given within the last few days on the professional networking platform LinkedIn.

After the introduction of the new IT rules, WhatsApp had named Paresh B Lal as the Grievance Redressal Officer for India on its website, while Facebook named Spurti Priya. When contacted, a statement sent via e-mail from Meta and WhatsApp said, “We have appointed officers as per the requirements of the Intermediary Guidelines. We have a continuous dialogue with the government regarding the new IT rules. We have the right to find new candidates as per the need, as these officers are very important.”

There are crores of users of WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram in India
According to the figures given by the Government of India earlier this year, there are 53 crore users of WhatsApp, 41 crores of Facebook, and 21 crores of Instagram in the country.

New IT rules have come into existence from May 25
New eye rules have come into existence in the country from May 25, 2021. Under these, it is mandatory for social media companies to set up a grievance redressal system for redressal of user complaints. Under the new IT rules, large social media intermediaries with 50 lakh users will have to appoint Grievance Officer, Nodal Officer, and Chief Compliance Officer. The officers to be appointed to these posts should be residents of India. Criminal action can be taken against social media companies for not following the rules.
