New Delhi: Arindam Chaudhary, director of the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), was arrested on charges of tax evasion of Rs 23 crore. Another director Gurudas Malik Thakur has also been arrested in the same case. This action was taken by the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Commissionerate based in South Delhi under section 89 of the Finance Act.
Arindam Chaudhary is accused of claiming an unfair service tax credit of Rs 23 crore under the Central Value Added Tax (CENVAT). Arindam and Gurudas were produced in the court after their arrest on Friday, from where both were sent to 14 days judicial custody. Earlier, on 14 March this year, Chaudhary was arrested in a case of forgery. He then allegedly used a fake medical certificate to avoid appearing before the police in a 2016 case.
Explain that Delhi Police had registered a case against IIPM in the year 2015 on the complaint of UGC. He was accused of cheating and forgery of students along with not being recognized by any authorized institute.
