New Delhi: The International Cricket Council has taken a big decision to end the difference between men’s and women’s cricket. Now men’s and women’s cricket teams will get equal prize money in the ICC event. The decision was taken during the ICC’s annual conference held in Durban, South Africa, which is a milestone in the ICC’s endeavor to achieve prize money parity by 2030. After this decision, the prize money that the men’s team gets after winning the Women’s World Cup or any match of the ICC event, now the women’s cricket team will also get the same.

ICC Chairman Greg Barclay said, “This is an important moment in the history of the game and I am delighted that male and female cricketers competing in ICC global events will now receive equal prize money.” We started increasing the prize money of ICC events in women’s cricket in 2017 to meet our goal of giving equal prize money to men’s and women’s cricket teams.

Now the team that wins the Women’s T20 and ODI World Cup will also get the same prize money as the men. The same will apply to the Under-19 World Cup as well. The winning and runner-up teams of the 2020 and 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup received $1 million and $500,000 respectively, which was 5 times the prize money of 2018. Apart from this, the prize money of the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup was also increased from $ 2 million given for winning the World Cup in England in 2017 to $ 3.5 million.

BCCI Secretary Jai Shah has also expressed happiness by tweeting about this historic decision of ICC. Shah said, “I am very happy to announce that now the discrimination between men’s and women’s teams has been erased. In ICC tournaments (T20 and ODI World Cup), men’s and women’s teams will get equal prize money. Both teams will now move forward together. I thank the board members for this decision.”

What is the difference between the prize money of the Men’s and Women’s World Cup?
Before this historic decision of ICC, there was a big difference in the prize money for Men’s and Women’s ODI and T20 World Cup. For winning the Men’s ODI World Cup in 2019, England got Rs 28 crore as prize money. At the same time, runner-up New Zealand also got an amount of Rs 14 crore.

On the other hand, talking about the Women’s ODI World Cup, the Australian team, which became the champion in 2022, got about Rs 10 crore as prize money, while the runner-up team got an amount of Rs 4.5 crore. There was a difference of 3 times between the women’s and men’s teams in the prize money of the ODI World Cup itself.
