New Delhi: The Karnataka High Court has upheld the hijab ban in educational institutions. After which a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the order of the High Court. This petition has been filed by a Muslim student named Niba Naaz through Advocate-on-Record Anas Tanveer.
Earlier, the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday said that the hijab was not a part of the essential religious practice in the Islamic faith. The state had effectively upheld the ban against headscarves in educational institutions and rejected a plea by Muslim girls to allow it to be worn in classrooms.
A three-judge full bench of the High Court observed that the school uniform rule is a reasonable restriction and is constitutionally accepted, on which girl students cannot raise objections.

The Karnataka government appealed to everyone to follow the order, saying that education is primary. While the Muslim Students’ Union Campus Front of India (CFI) protested the “unconstitutional order” and vowed to do everything possible to protect constitutional and individual rights. The government also said it would try to “win the hearts” of “misguided” Muslim girls.
Significantly, six girl students of a college in Udupi had attended a press conference organized by the CFI in the coastal town in January this year after the college authorities refused them to enter the classroom wearing a hijab.
