Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic): An ambassador of the Dominican Republic has been apparently abducted from neighboring Haiti. The local newspaper El Día said in a report on Tuesday that the government had increased the number of military personnel on the border.
Officials have not commented on the kidnapping of the ambassador. The government issued a statement over the weekend saying the country’s ambassador to Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince, Carlos Guillen Tatis, was apparently abducted on Friday while he was on his way to a border crossing. Diplomat Farouk Miguel Castillo also said Tatis may have been kidnapped from the Croix-des-Bucets district of Haiti’s capital.
The site is a stronghold of the Mawzo faction, which in October kidnapped 17 people from a US missionary group and held most of them hostage until December. Officials said they presented some evidence from the ambassador’s telephone to Haiti police, which indicated he had been abducted.
