Berlin: Germany has announced to impose new restrictions after Christmas to prevent the spread of Omicron, a new form of the coronavirus. Germany said the new restrictions would not be the same as a complete lockdown but would prohibit social interactions even for people who have been vaccinated.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at a news conference on Tuesday evening, “I can understand those who do not want to hear about the coronavirus and its new forms, but we cannot ignore the next wave, and Nor should we do that.”

Under the new restrictions, gatherings of more than 10 people will be prohibited at private gatherings, nightclubs will be closed across the country and large events such as football matches will be held without spectators. These restrictions will come into effect from December 28, but states can implement them even before that.

Germany new restrictions

Scholz said the government decided to impose the new restrictions after Christmas because family-celebrated festivals such as Christmas and Easter “have not proven to be major drivers of the global pandemic”, but banning New Year celebrations. This is necessary so that the German health system is not over-stretched due to cases of Covid-19.
