Beijing: Commercial operation of the first indigenously developed third-generation nuclear power reactor Hualong One has started in China on Saturday. This information was given by China National Nuclear Corp. This third-generation nuclear reactor is located in Fuqing city in southeastern Fujian province of China. It has been designed for 60 years. Its main equipment is manufactured domestically.

According to China National Nuclear Corp or CNNC, each unit of Hualong One has a capacity of 1.161 million kWh and can meet the annual domestic electricity demand of 1 million people in central developed countries. CNNC president Yu Jianfeng said, “With Hualong One, China has now reached the forefront of third generation nuclear technology in the world, along with countries like the United States, France and Russia.”

Yu Jianfeng further stated that commercial use of Hulong One would also reduce carbon emissions and help achieve China’s low carbon targets such as carbon neutrality before 2060. A second Hulong unit will also be formed at the end of this year.

Nuclear power in china
By 2019, only less than 5% of China’s annual electricity comes from nuclear power. It is expected to increase now, as China is trying to become carbon neutral by 2060. China has 47 nuclear power plants. They together generate 48.75 million kilowatts of electricity. With this, China has the world’s third-largest nuclear power capacity after the United States and France.
