New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has postponed the upcoming by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Kerala, moving the voting date from November 13 to November 20. This decision came after multiple appeals from major political parties, including the BJP, Congress, BSP, and RLD, requesting a rescheduling due to concerns over low voter turnout during the festive period.

Festivals Lead to New Voting Date Amid Concerns of Low Voter Turnout

Originally set for November 13, the by-election date clashed with a series of religious and cultural events across these states, including Kartik Purnima and other local festivals. Political parties argued that these festivities would impact voter turnout, as many residents would be engaged in celebrations or traveling. The Election Commission considered these appeals to ensure better participation and avoid any possible disruptions to the voting process.

BJP’s Push for Rescheduling Cites Kartik Purnima Celebrations

One of the significant catalysts for this change was a formal request from the BJP, which submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission, particularly emphasizing the impact of Kartik Purnima celebrations in Uttar Pradesh. Falling on November 15, Kartik Purnima is a prominent festival, drawing large gatherings and pilgrimage activities in areas like Ghaziabad, Kundarki, Meerapur, and Prayagraj. The BJP highlighted that preparations and gatherings for Kartik Purnima often start several days in advance, reducing the likelihood of high voter participation on November 13. Based on these considerations, they requested the voting be postponed to November 20.

Election Commission’s Decision Balances Festive Observance and Voter Access

In response, the Election Commission announced the revised schedule for the by-elections across these states, affirming its commitment to accommodating voter convenience while ensuring democratic participation. The Commission’s decision marks an effort to balance the electoral process with cultural observances, aiming to provide a fair opportunity for all eligible voters to participate in the democratic exercise without festival-related constraints.
