This is how the celebration of this day started
World Mental Health Day was started in the year 1992. This day was first celebrated at the initiative of the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Richard Hunter and the World Federation for Mental Health. Eugene Brody, the then Secretary-General of the United Nations, advised to celebrate this day in the year 1994 and a theme was also set to celebrate it. Since then every year this day is celebrated with a special theme.

Due to mental stress, anxiety, and depression, many people in the world are suffering from various types of problems and mental diseases like social stigma, dementia, hysteria, anxiety, and narcissism. World Mental Health Day is celebrated with the aim of attracting people’s attention to these problems and spreading awareness among people. So that people become aware of mental problems and diseases and can get their treatment done in time.

India’s position on mental health
According to a national survey conducted in the year 2015-16, one in every 8 people in India i.e. about 17.5 crore people, is suffering from some kind of mental illness. Of these, 2.5 crore people are suffering from serious diseases. They need mental help immediately.
